Decision Support Service (DSS)

The Decision Support Service (DSS) helps adults who have difficulties with decision‑making capacity.

The Decision Support Service (DSS) helps adults who have difficulties with decision‑making capacity.

It was established under the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015 and operates within the Mental Health Commission.

The DSS registers decision‑support arrangements and oversees those providing support.

Adults who may need the DSS include people with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, dementia, acquired brain injuries, or age-related conditions.

Support may also be required when banks, hospitals, or lawyers question a person’s capacity to give consent or make decisions.

People who want to plan for a future time when they may lose capacity can also use the DSS.
